Crawford Electric is a member-owned, non-profit rural electric cooperative with a five-county service area in east-central Missouri. Our facilities are based in Bourbon, Missouri. Our mission always has been to provide the best possible service to our members at the lowest possible cost. The co-op story shows that good things can happen when people work together. Our staff and board of directors work in the best interest of members and are interested in your input, especially at annual meeting. As a rural electric cooperative, Crawford Electric is a partner in Americas largest utility network and benefits from the support and expertise of several related organizations.
Crawford Electric is an independent electric utility incorporated in 1940 under the laws of Missouri and controlled by the people who use our electricity. Electric cooperatives originally were established to provide reliable, affordable electric service to rural areas that had been deemed "unprofitable" by the investor-owned utilities. Our member-owers have control over the assets and operations of the co-op through voting and electing members to serve on the cooperative's board of directors. Today, electric cooperatives nationwide represent an industry with assets of more than $70 billion; they employ 60,000 people in the United States; they own and operate more than 2.3 million miles of line; and they serve 13 million businesses, homes, schools, churches, farms, irrigation systems, and other establishments representing more than 34 million people.
